Pressel ties course record, co-leader at Kia
(Reuters) - American Morgan Pressel is threatening to end South Korean born-golfers' domination of the early LPGA season after firing an eight-under-par 64 on Friday to tie for the second round lead of the Kia Classic in southern California. Pressel, who tied the course record, joins South Korean Lee Mi-rim at 10-under-par. South Korea-born players have won all six of the LPGA’s tournaments so far this year, but Pressel is looking to bring that run to an end and earn her first victory since 2008. “It was kind of stress-free golf out there today,” Pressel told reporters.

Thousands march in Indiana to protest law seen targeting gays

Thousands of people marched in Indiana's largest city on Saturday to protest a state law that supporters contend promotes religious freedom but detractors see as a covert move to support discrimination against gay people. Waving signs reading "No hate in our state" and carrying rainbow flags, a crowd of at least 2,000 people including Democratic elected officials rallied the same day that business-rating website Angie's List Inc put on hold its plans to expand its Indianapolis operation with new offices, citing the new law. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed overwhelmingly by the Republican led-state legislature and signed into law on Thursday by Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Supporters say the legislation will keep the government from forcing business owners to act against strongly held religious beliefs.

Conflicting portraits of NBA ex-owner Donald Sterling emerge as trial ends

By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The woman behind the downfall of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling painted conflicting portraits of him in court on Friday, calling him a kind, generous mentor and father figure to her but a mean-spirited "con artist" and bigot toward others. V. Stiviano, 32, also testified that the 80-year-old billionaire real estate mogul spent far more time with her and her relatives during her 2-1/2 years as his personal assistant, driver and confidante than he did with his own wife and children. Stiviano took the witness stand for a second day in Los Angeles Superior Court during the trial of a lawsuit brought by Sterling's wife seeking return of community marital assets she claims her husband gave Stiviano without her consent. Shelly Sterling's lawyers asked the judge to grant her title to a $1.8 million house her husband had bought for Stiviano, plus more than $1 million in cash they said he lavished on Stiviano for living expenses, credit-card purchases and three luxury cars.

Australian Appleby out indefinitely after back surgery

(Reuters) - Nine-times PGA Tour winner Stuart Appleby has undergone back surgery for a herniated disc and will be out of action indefinitely. Appleby, 43, who has not played since mid-February, has endured back problems for much of his career. "No idea when I'm back as I don't know or anybody knows how long it takes to get 100 percent," he told Reuters. The Australian is one of only six players to have shot 59 on the PGA Tour. He was not exempt for next month's Masters, after finishing 31st on the tour's points list last year. The top 30 clinched invitations to Augusta. ...

AJI Report #19 | Scott K Davis and his son Tommy on Gamification and Programming for Kids

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/13/aji-report-19--scott-k-davis-and-his-son.aspx

We are very excited about this show. John and Jeff sat down with Scott Davis and his son Tommy to talk about Gamification and Programming for Kids. Tommy is nine years old and the Iowa Code Camp was his second time presenting. Scott and Tommy introduce a package called Scratch that was developed by MIT to teach kids about logic and interacting with programming using sprites. Tommy's favorite experience with programming right now is Lego Mindstorms because of the interaction with the Legos and the development. Most adults when they get started with development also got started with interacting more with the physical machines. The next generation is given amazing tools, but the tools tend to be sealed and the physical interaction is not there. With some of these alternative hobby platforms like Legos, Arduino, and .NET Micro Framework, kids can write some amazing application and see their code work with physical movement and interaction with devices and sensors.

In the second half of this podcast, Scott talks about how companies can us Gamification to prompt employees to interact with software and processes in the organization. We see gamification throughout the consumer space and you need to do is open up the majority of the apps on our phones or tablets and there is some interaction point to give the user a reward for using the tool. Scott gets into his product Qonqr which is described as the board game Risk and Foursquare together. Scott gets into the different mindsets of gamers (Bartle Index) and how you can use these mindsets to get the most out of your team through gamification techniques.

Patrick Delancy, the first person we interviewed on the AJI Report, is joining us again for Episode 18. This time around Patrick explains what Code Smells and Anti-patterns are and how developers can learn from these issues in their code. Patrick takes the approach of addressing your code in his presentations instead of pointing fingers at others. We spend a lot of time talking about how to address a developer with bad practices in place that would show up on the radar as a Code Smell or Anti-Pattern without making them feel inferior. Patrick also list out a few open-source frameworks that use good patterns and practices as well as how he continues his education through interacting with other developers.
