Furyk had five birdies and no bogeys on the par-70 Royal Montreal Golf Club's Blue Course for a 54-hole total of 15-under par 195. Hall of Fame cuts new retiree induction time

US all-time home run king Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and other players linked to performance-enhancing substances now have less time as candidates for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame officials announced Saturday they were changing induction rules for the first time since 1991, trimming the maximum number of years that retired players remain on the ballot from 15 years to 10 years. Players must be listed by at least five percent of voters from a North American media panel to remain on the ballot. "The board is committed to keeping the policies and voting procedures of the Hall of Fame relevant," said Hall of Fame board chairman Jane Forbes Clark.

Furyk leads by three as local hopes fade at Canadian Open

(Reuters) - American Jim Furyk moved closer to ending a personal winless streak of nearly four years when he earned a three-shot lead after the third round at the Canadian Open in Montreal on Saturday. No Canadian has won the country’s national open since English-born Pat Fletcher in 1954, and it has been 100 years since the last Canadian-born player triumphed. He was not at his very sharpest, but displayed a deft short game to post a 15-under 195 total, while South African Tim Clark, boosted by an unlikely eagle at the par-four second, carded a 64 to vault into second place on 12-under. Furyk, a 16-time PGA Tour winner, will join illustrious company if he wins on Sunday and becomes just the fifth player to win the Canadian Open three times since the event’s inception in 1904.

LeBron will return to 23 jersey with Cavaliers

NBA superstar LeBron James confirmed Sunday he will return to the number 23 jersey he wore in his first stint with Cleveland when he returns to the Cavaliers next season. James posted a message on Twitter and Instgram saying he would give up the number 6, which he had worn for four seasons in Miami after leaving the Cavaliers in 2010 and with US Olympic gold medal teams in 2008 and 2012. James wore 23 during his high school years in nearby Akron and with Cleveland, although some fans burned James jerseys after he announced his departure to the Heat. James signed a two-year, $42 million deal with Cleveland earlier this month, holding out on a longer-term contract until after expected new television deals boost maximum payrolls for future seasons.

The NBA is considering extending its annual all-star game break from three days to a full week so players have a longer mid-season rest, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Saturday. Citing an unnamed NBA source, the newspaper reported that the plan would give players seven days off in mid-February but increase the number of back-to-back games played during the rest of the season by one or two per club. The newspaper said the league is using the week-long gap model when planning its schedule, which will be released next month after a delay so television partners can adjust to changes such as the blockbuster move of LeBron James from Miami to Cleveland and plan accordingly.

AJI Report #19 | Scott K Davis and his son Tommy on Gamification and Programming for Kids

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/13/aji-report-19--scott-k-davis-and-his-son.aspx

We are very excited about this show. John and Jeff sat down with Scott Davis and his son Tommy to talk about Gamification and Programming for Kids. Tommy is nine years old and the Iowa Code Camp was his second time presenting. Scott and Tommy introduce a package called Scratch that was developed by MIT to teach kids about logic and interacting with programming using sprites. Tommy's favorite experience with programming right now is Lego Mindstorms because of the interaction with the Legos and the development. Most adults when they get started with development also got started with interacting more with the physical machines. The next generation is given amazing tools, but the tools tend to be sealed and the physical interaction is not there. With some of these alternative hobby platforms like Legos, Arduino, and .NET Micro Framework, kids can write some amazing application and see their code work with physical movement and interaction with devices and sensors.

In the second half of this podcast, Scott talks about how companies can us Gamification to prompt employees to interact with software and processes in the organization. We see gamification throughout the consumer space and you need to do is open up the majority of the apps on our phones or tablets and there is some interaction point to give the user a reward for using the tool. Scott gets into his product Qonqr which is described as the board game Risk and Foursquare together. Scott gets into the different mindsets of gamers (Bartle Index) and how you can use these mindsets to get the most out of your team through gamification techniques.

AJI Report #18 | Patrick Delancy On Code Smells and Anti-Patterns

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/09/aji-report-18--patrick-delancy-on-code-smells-and.aspx

Patrick Delancy, the first person we interviewed on the AJI Report, is joining us again for Episode 18. This time around Patrick explains what Code Smells and Anti-patterns are and how developers can learn from these issues in their code. Patrick takes the approach of addressing your code in his presentations instead of pointing fingers at others. We spend a lot of time talking about how to address a developer with bad practices in place that would show up on the radar as a Code Smell or Anti-Pattern without making them feel inferior. Patrick also list out a few open-source frameworks that use good patterns and practices as well as how he continues his education through interacting with other developers.

AJI Report #14 | Brian Lagunas on XAML and Windows 8

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/02/aji-report-14-ndash-brian-lagunas-on-xaml-and-windows.aspx

We sat down with Brian at the Iowa Code Camp to talk about his sessions, WPF, Application Design, and what Infragistics has to offer developers. Infragistics is a huge supporter of regional events like Iowa Code Camp and we want to thank them for their support of the Midwest region. Brian is a sharp guy and it was great to meet him and learn more about what makes him tick.

Brian Lagunas is an INETA Community Speaker, co-leader of the Boise .Net Developers User Group (NETDUG), and original author of the Extended WPF Toolkit. He is a multi-recipient of the Microsoft Community Contributor Award and can be found speaking at a variety of user groups and code camps around the nation. Brian currently works at Infragistics as a Product Manager for the award winning NetAdvantage for WPF and Silverlight components. Before geeking out, Brian served his country in the United States Army as an infantryman and later served his local community as a deputy sheriff.
