Fore! In Iran, golf remains a game of the elite

The bumpy fairways and patchy putting surfaces -- more burnt-out browns than grassy greens -- are not much to look at. In Iran however, this is golf at its finest. In the same way that the streets of Tehran got new names when the Islamic republic dramatically came into being in 1979, so did the Engelhab ("Revolution" in Farsi) Club. Iran's only recognised golf course has had a fairly rough time since.

Coetsee, who has never won on the European Tour before, had an eventful back nine that included four birdies and two bogeys as he finished on 14-under-par 201. Among those two behind was Briton Steve Webster who produced the round of the day with a faultless 65 that included seven birdies.

McIlroy set to miss cut at Honda Classic

World number one Rory McIlroy admitted Friday he needs to sharpen up with the Masters only weeks away, as he looked set to miss the cut at the US PGA Tour's Honda Classic. The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland found just one birdie with five bogeys in a four-over-par 74 for a seven-over total of 147 that left him three shots over the projected cut line when darkness halted the second round of the rain-hit $6.1 million event in Florida. "I don't like missing cuts," said McIlroy, who last missed a cut on US soil at the 2012 US Open, but missed the cut at the European Tour's Irish Open last June. "You want to be playing on the weekend and I'm not there," added McIlroy, who was already looking forward to next week's World Golf Championships event at Doral in Miami.

Harrington grabs lead at storm-struck PGA event

Ireland's Padraig Harrington completed a four-under par 66 Saturday to seize a one-stroke lead over American Patrick Reed after the second round of the storm-hit US PGA Tour's Honda Classic. Thunderstorms on Friday pushed the conclusion of the second round to Saturday morning and they returned Saturday afternoon to swamp the course at PGA National, wiping out play early. Harrington, a three-time major champion who has slid to 297th in the world rankings, could have enjoyed a larger margin but a bogey-bogey finish left him on seven-under 133 after 36 holes. "At times I get lost and distracted from the process," Harrington said.

While men's contact sports like football and ice hockey are most associated with concussions, women actually have them much more often than men, said Dr. Robert Stevens, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who specializes in brain injury. He also said new studies suggest the concussion symptoms in women are also more acute than those suffered by men. "The incidence of concussions in sports is higher in women than in men, possibly two times higher," he said, adding that concussions in women tend to be "more severe" and it takes women longer to recover than men.

Peterson eager for return after judge overturns suspension

(Reuters) - Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson said on Friday he was keen to return to the field after U.S. District Judge David Doty overturned his suspension by the NFL. "It is a positive step in protecting players' rights and preserving due process for all players," Peterson said in a press release one day after Doty granted an NFL Players Association motion to vacate a previous ruling by an arbitrator. "It also brings me one step closer to getting back on the football field and playing the sport I love." The NFL has appealed the decision by Doty, who ruled that National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell acted beyond his authority in November when he suspended Peterson, the league's most valuable player in 2012, until at least April 15. The federal judge said the NFL could not retroactively suspend Peterson under a new personal conduct policy announced by Goodell in December for behavior that occurred under the old code.

Going to the game? Pack earplugs and lose the vuvuzela, WHO says

Sports fans risk having their hearing ruined by vuvuzela trumpets and deliberate attempts to increase stadium noise and they need to start seeing earplugs as something cool, the World Health Organization said on Friday. Shelly Chadha, a WHO expert on preventing deafness, said some U.S. sporting crowds consider breaking noise levels as an achievement, and cited a 136.6 decibel world record claimed by Seattle Seahawks fans in 2013. Asked if they should be banned, Chadha said: "Yes, well, vuvuzelas are certainly something we can live without." Around 1.1 billion young people are at risk from hearing loss, the WHO said, in addition to about 180 million who have already suffered preventable damage to their hearing. As well as sporting events, there are risks to hearing at nightclubs and from listening to smartphones, and the solutions include volume limits, noise-cancelling headphones and earplugs, which can reduce noise levels by 30 decibels, turning the roar of a fighter jet into little more than a hair dryer.

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/09/aji-report-18--patrick-delancy-on-code-smells-and.aspx

Patrick Delancy, the first person we interviewed on the AJI Report, is joining us again for Episode 18. This time around Patrick explains what Code Smells and Anti-patterns are and how developers can learn from these issues in their code. Patrick takes the approach of addressing your code in his presentations instead of pointing fingers at others. We spend a lot of time talking about how to address a developer with bad practices in place that would show up on the radar as a Code Smell or Anti-Pattern without making them feel inferior. Patrick also list out a few open-source frameworks that use good patterns and practices as well as how he continues his education through interacting with other developers.

AJI Report #19 | Scott K Davis and his son Tommy on Gamification and Programming for Kids

Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jjulian/archive/2012/11/13/aji-report-19--scott-k-davis-and-his-son.aspx

We are very excited about this show. John and Jeff sat down with Scott Davis and his son Tommy to talk about Gamification and Programming for Kids. Tommy is nine years old and the Iowa Code Camp was his second time presenting. Scott and Tommy introduce a package called Scratch that was developed by MIT to teach kids about logic and interacting with programming using sprites. Tommy's favorite experience with programming right now is Lego Mindstorms because of the interaction with the Legos and the development. Most adults when they get started with development also got started with interacting more with the physical machines. The next generation is given amazing tools, but the tools tend to be sealed and the physical interaction is not there. With some of these alternative hobby platforms like Legos, Arduino, and .NET Micro Framework, kids can write some amazing application and see their code work with physical movement and interaction with devices and sensors.

In the second half of this podcast, Scott talks about how companies can us Gamification to prompt employees to interact with software and processes in the organization. We see gamification throughout the consumer space and you need to do is open up the majority of the apps on our phones or tablets and there is some interaction point to give the user a reward for using the tool. Scott gets into his product Qonqr which is described as the board game Risk and Foursquare together. Scott gets into the different mindsets of gamers (Bartle Index) and how you can use these mindsets to get the most out of your team through gamification techniques.
